1. Works sold as 'illuminations' shall be exclusively unique items,
produced entirely by hand using traditional methods.
2. Works copied from other existing works, historical or modern, shall
be sold as "copies", even if they otherwise comply with Article 1.
3. No duplication technique shall be used for a work sold as an
'illumination'. Photocopies, stencil-work, pre-traced designs, silk screens, etc.
shall be exclusively sold as 'reproductions' and not as 'illuminations',
even if the copies are limited, numbered, and signed.
This article applies even if only a part of the work is made with such
duplication methods.
4. The illuminator pledges that by preference, parchment (made from
animal skin) shall be used for works sold under the name 'illumination'.
In exceptional cases where another medium is used, this fact shall be made clear to the client
5. In the same spirit, works sold as 'calligraphy' shall be exclusively
handwritten. Calligraphy may be done on a wide variety of media.
6. The term "gilding" applies solely to gilding with pure gold leaf.
- Powdered gold will carry the term 'shell-gold' or 'painting with
pure gold powder'
- Powdered bronze or other metals, bronze leaf or other metal leaf
shall not be used for works sold as 'illuminations', due to the problems
with preservation of works made with these products.
7. The word 'tempera' shall be used only for pure pigments ground from
egg or organic adhesive.
The illuminator pledges not to use acrylic paint on parchment due to
problems of adhesion with these colors.
If, in an exceptional case, gouache or other commercially-formulated paint
is used, this fact shall be made clear to the client.
8. An illuminator who signs this charter, whether artist or artisan,
declares himself or herself to be a professional in accordance with the laws
of the nation in which he or she resides.
